“When I first came across The Jayne Sproson Consultancy, it was in 2020, and I noticed her advice on some dental forums I use on a regular basis. I liked her feisty comebacks to some of the male ‘big guns’ and her no nonsense attitude , while still being approachable. Listening to her talk on some podcasts continued to allow me to build a positive opinion of her as someone that held similar values to myself.
My husband and I own a large practice that had a huge NHS contract that we had always been able to service. The challenges of recruiting dentists to work within the NHS and a growing focus on more aesthetic treatments, orthodontics and facial aesthetics was seeing our business be pulled in many directions.
Initially I contacted Jayne to see if she could help us navigate how to integrate this increased private work load into our clinic. We undertook a Discovery Day which is the beginning of the Discover Develop Deliver Programme and although my husband was sceptical of this (he was unsure of how outside help could enable us to become more efficient) we both entered the process with open minds.
We certainly didn’t see working with Jayne as our way to convert the practice to private, but it soon became abundantly apparent that the growing private side of our business was the thing that was making our business profitable. We were apprehensive to complete a full conversion, so we took a staggered approach with myself doing it first. We had quite a stressful period where the press and MPs got involved with the news we were converting to private treatment.
Having Jayne and her dentist husband and business partner, Jon, to help and support us through that time was invaluable. They were able to give us comfort and reassurance that it would all blow over. Jayne supported us day and night and she held my hand while I cried. She dealt with the local MP personally and had excellent contacts to help us if we needed to do any media coverage. She was such an invaluable assistance to us at this time.
The resulting changes in our business have allowed us to have a much-reduced stress at home. As being husband and wife and business partners, it’s easy for work to be the only topic of conversation. Removing the NHS part of our business was initially terrifying for us as we felt we enjoyed the security of a monthly income. But having Jayne show us that we could reduce the volume of patients we saw and increase the time we spent with them AND replacing the NHS conract funds, made us more confident that it was the right thing todo for the business and in fact very important to us – the right thing for our patients.
The fact we don’t have to worry about targets and other dentists doing their share of the contract has been such a relief. Despite the stress of a conversion we did have laughs along the way with Jayne and Jon. Spending time with them while working on the business and socially was never a chore. Working on our Brand after the conversion was such a fantastic experience. It really was an exciting process and gave us the zest for change and growth. Myself and my husband loved this part of the programme and we know that it really reflects us and what we stand for so we have not had to sacrifice our integrity or authenticity.
For the first time we now feel that our business is really ours and we are not bound by the rules of others. Having a clear brand and brand values gave us clarity with our goals, strategic decision making and gave us an improved work and leadership mindset. This has flowed to all of our team and they could understand our new mission and can see our passion to change the working environments for the better. Working with Jayne allowed us to verbalise these changes and implement daily huddles, alter our practice meetings and support our PM to deal with her changing role. As part of the Deliver bit of the programme, Jayne holds Power Hours with our PM to support her in navigating the new tasks she performs for business. This enables her to ask questions and learn without needing input from us or feeling insecure or vulnerable to her paymaster.
We can already see the return on our investment in this regard, as our Practice Manager is growing in confidence and dealing with more business tasks with ease. Working with Jayne allowed us to alter the fundamental structure of our business and focus on our own strengths. In this regard, she has helped me gain my confidence in becoming the MD of our business, and growing my aesthetic ambitions.
Our coaching calls are fun but completed with a focus and great intent. Working with Jayne has allowed my husband to change his focus to using his clinical talents in areas which he loves and excels such as Endodontics.
We now work in our complementary unique abilities for the success of each our own careers and for the partnership. He is now our clinical director and enjoys supporting and mentoring any new staff who are thriving under his guidance. Having these newly defined roles allows us to have a clear business structure. Jayne brought an outside objective perspective of what our strengths and weaknesses look like which is incredibly important as it took the emotion out of the situation. Often discussions between husband and wife can become arguments in this regard! So having Jayne to support us helped us all remain friends and get the job done. I am grateful to The Jayne Sproson Consultancy for helping us navigate such a monumental change in our business. Her years of experience and wealth of knowledge and personal contacts were invaluable. If you are considering a business transformation, I would recommend Jayne whole heartedly.”
